"Bright Young Gems"

Promising young designers crafting jewellery from unusual materials stole the show at International Jewellery London.

Kity Hefang Sun's intricate shoulder piece is made from gold and crafted upon Origami. Hefang won the Astley Clarke award for outstanding craftsmanship. The Central Saint Martins graduate will see her collection sold on www.astleyClarke.com in 2010.

Anthony Roussel creates sculptural, organic forms using thin layers of Finnish birch, which are glued and compression-joined and, then, laser-cut into sweeping, wavelike shapes based upon the British coastline and geological formations.

Anthony Roussel also works with other woods, including maple, ash and sycamore.

A design by Andy Farrow, who specialises in metal and crystal. Farrow has been commissioned to create five special ‘Trend’ designs for Swarovski, which will be exhibited at the Bijorhca jewellery fair in Paris, in January.

The earrings designed by Chinese-born Fei Liu, consist of a lattice of platinum set with pieces of traditional, blue and white porcelain from the Qing Dynasty. Having won the Lonmin Design Innovation Award 2009, he describes his design as a link between cultural heritage and 21st century technology.

The shoulder piece is absolute perfection, and Anthony Roussel's sculptural pieces are great artistic creations.
