"Call Me Curvy"

Marquita Pring explains why she prefers to be defined as ‘curvy’ rather than ‘plus-size’.

isn’t the only inhabitant of the curvy fashion universe. There’s a new model the sector’s talking about: Marquita Pring. We had the pleasure of meeting and doing an interview with her for our Curvy section, and we’ve seen her modelling for the new Evans plus-size fashion line as well as doing the Jean-Paul Gaultier spring-summer 2011 show. Now she’s done an interview with the Fashionista website, in which she says that she prefers to be defined as a curvy, not plus-size, model.

Marquita says that plus-size has negative connotations – it is a sort of label that she does not want applied to her. She feels she is simply a model and should not have to give additional explanations about her size. Her ambition is to be an example for all women, whatever their size.

The American model recognises herself better when she hears herself talked about as a curvy woman because, as she says, “I am a curvy, voluptuous, sexy woman and I think the word curvy relays a much more positive image. You can be a size 4 or 14 and be considered curvy.”
